Training
“Training isn’t just about learning new strategies — it’s about shifting how we see people living with a dementia. For me, training is a way to open up conversations, unpick habits without judgment, and build skills that support better quality of life.
Whether we are in a health or community setting, the way we speak, listen, include and respond matters deeply. Training helps challenge assumptions we’ve absorbed about ageing, ability, and care - creating space to acknowledge the whole person.”
Listening Differently: Dementia & Communication
This training invites participants to pause, reflect, and listen differently.
We’ll explore how people living with a dementia communicate in many ways, including through responses or behaviours that are labelled “challenging.”
Together, we’ll ask: what might someone be trying to tell us? What happens when we treat those responses as meaningful, not problematic?
Through discussion, group activities, and simple tools, we’ll unpack the deeper emotional, sensory, and social needs behind these moments and look at how our own communication can either calm or escalate.
Whether you’re a volunteer, or professional, this session will help you to build stronger, more supportive relationships with people living with a dementia.
“I recently took part in a Dementia Training session with Emily and found it both insightful and engaging. She delivered the content in a clear and thoughtful way, making complex subjects easy to grasp. I particularly valued the emphasis on person-centred care and learning how to respond with empathy to those living with dementia. I left the session feeling more informed and confident in my ability to support others in my community.”

Meaningful Engagement: Creativity & Connection
This training dives into how creativity can spark genuine, person-led engagement with people living with a dementia — nurturing connection, dignity, and joy.
Together, we’ll explore: What does meaningful engagement truly look, sound, and feel like? And, how can creative approaches bridge the gap between care and connection?
Through real-life scenarios, group discussions, and practical tools, we’ll move beyond the idea that ‘creativity’ is just about a final product, exploring the benefit of process-led activities, shared moments, and the creative choices that empower people.
Whether you are a volunteer, artist, or care professional, this session will give you the skills, inspiration, and confidence to create richer, more meaningful experiences for those living with a dementia.
Training can be tailored to the needs of your organisations or group.
All sessions include an overview of:
Types of dementia, symptoms and stages - with a focus on often overlooked sensory changes
Person-centred approaches - based on the life-long work of Professor Tom Kitwood
Communication strategies - based on the ‘Ten+ Communication Option Model’ by Dr Gemma Jones
